Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Catholic Church, a period of 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. It is a day of solemn reflection on human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God. During Mass, ashes are blessed and applied to the foreheads of the faithful in the shape of a cross as a sign of penance and humility. This act serves as a public commitment to turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel, encouraging parishioners to deepen their relationship with God and prepare spiritually for the celebration of Jesus' resurrection at Easter.
